We are very excited to present Maya: the Illusionist at BorderLight Fringe Festival in Cleveland, Ohio this year! BorderLight is a hybrid festival featuring curated, collaborative, and self-produced fringe programming from all genres of theatrical performance, with the mission of presenting visionary international theatre and building cross-cultural understanding. We are truly honored to be a part of such a project, and to have a voice in this special cultural exchange.

Maya: the Illusionist is a good fit for this festival, since it is experimental and thought-provoking in its theme, music, and choreography. The production is an exploration of how the very same world can appear so differently to different people, imagining the nebulous force behind these manifold appearances as a character — Maya.

Maya is a major trope in Hindu mythology, frequently altering the course of events by changing the appearance of the world, seemingly without any moral judgment or intent. Through a combination of dance, poetry, and storytelling, we present universal scenarios in which this magical creator goes to work, and ask how her creations can take such firm hold of our experience. As we continue to engage with people whose worldviews we cannot understand, it is critical that we investigate the cause of these disparate realities, to challenge ourselves to look for a universal reality under layers of conflicting experience.
