Alo & Maya: the Illusionist

June 25, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

$20

Mayur Summer 2022

This summer, Mayur presents a set of works on the theme of light – Alo – set to the music and lyrics of Rabindranath Tagore. These pieces are choreographed by our own senior dancers under the mentorship of our director Sukanya Mukherji as part of a concerted effort to develop the creative capacity and production skills of our rising dancers.

Alo is followed by our feature presentation Maya: the Illusionist – adapted for the stage from our dance film, and performed live for the first time. The production is an exploration of how the very same world can appear so differently to different people, personifying the force behind these manifold appearances in the character of Maya. Maya is a major trope in Hindu mythology, frequently altering the course of events by changing the appearance of the world, seemingly without any moral judgment or intent. Through a combination of dance, poetry, and storytelling, we present universal scenarios in which this magical creator goes to work, and ask how her creations can take such firm hold of our experience. As we continue to engage with people whose worldviews we cannot understand, it is timely to investigate the cause of these disparate realities, to challenge ourselves to look for a universal reality under layers of conflicting experience.

Both Alo and Maya are supported by funding from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County.
